  1. *Standard drink: 100 ml of wine; 250 ml of beer; 275 ml of premixed drink containing spirits; or 25 ml of spirits (each about 10 g of ethanol).
  2. **When participants reported that “some” or “most” of their close friends (versus “none” or “one or two”) had an alcohol or drug problem, the variable was coded positively.
  3. ***We considered that a family history of alcohol or drug problems was present when participants reported at least one parent or sibling with an alcohol or drug problem.
